FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to automate the whole house at once?

1.No. Home automation is fully scalable. You can start with key systems like lighting, thermostat, or security, and expand over time as   your needs or budget allow.

Will your systems work with Alexa, Google, or Apple devices?

Yes. We install systems that are compatible with popular platforms like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit, as well as open-source platforms like Home Assistant.

Will the system work if the internet goes down?

Most basic functions (like lights and thermostats) continue working locally. However, remote control and notifications may be limited until the internet is restored—unless you have an automation hub with local processing.

Can I receive alerts on my phone if there’s a water leak or smoke detected?

Yes. Our smart smoke/CO detectors and water leak sensors can send instant mobile alerts and even shut off systems (like the water supply or HVAC) automatically to protect your home.

Do I need special wiring for home automation?

In most cases, no special wiring is needed. We use a mix of wireless and existing infrastructure, but for new builds or major renovations, we may recommend low-voltage prewiring for future expansion and cleaner installations.

Is home automation secure from hacking?

Yes, when done properly. We use encrypted networks, secure hubs, and best practices like password protection, guest access limits, and firewall optimization to safeguard your system.

Can I control everything from one app?

Yes. We can unify your systems into a single app dashboard depending on your platform—whether it’s SmartThings, Control4, Home Assistant, or another ecosystem.

Do you offer support after installation?

Yes. We offer ongoing technical support, system updates, and remote troubleshooting if needed. You can also opt into our annual check-up service to keep your system in top condition.

Is a smart thermostat worth the investment?

Absolutely. Smart thermostats can reduce energy bills, maintain comfort, and adapt to your routine. Many clients recover the cost within a year through energy savings.

Do smart systems qualify for rebates or incentives?

Some provinces (including Ontario) occasionally offer rebates for energy-saving devices like smart thermostats or lighting. We’ll let you know if your project qualifies.

Are your smart devices CSA or ESA compliant?

Yes. All devices we install are CSA-approved and meet Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC) requirements. We ensure installations are safe, inspected, and code-compliant where applicable.

Can your home automation system be integrated with my alarm company’s monitoring system?

Yes. We can integrate smart devices such as smoke detectors, door sensors, and motion detectors with third-party alarm systems and monitoring services, as long as their systems allow API or contact-based integration.

Can you install electrical for my new basement apartment or rental unit?

Absolutely. We handle legal second units, including separate metering, panel installations, and compliance with ESA and municipal requirements.

What areas do you serve in Ontario?

We primarily serve the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Halton Hills, Markham, Richmond Hill, Scarborough, Pickering, Oakville, Etobicoke and surrounding cities. Contact us to confirm service availability in your area.

Is aluminum wiring in my home dangerous?

Aluminum wiring from the 1960s–70s can be a fire hazard if not maintained properly. We offer aluminum wiring inspection and remediation, including upgrades or approved connection methods to bring your system up to standard.

Do you install backup generators for residential homes?

Yes. We install automatic standby generators and manual transfer switches, so your home stays powered during outages. We handle sizing, permitting, wiring, and startup testing.

Will your work be inspected by ESA?

Yes. As a licensed electrical contractor in Ontario, we file all necessary Notifications of Work with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Inspections are scheduled for rough-in and final stages where required, and we provide clients with ESA certificates once approved.

Can I live in my home while electrical work is being done?

In most cases, yes. For smaller jobs like lighting upgrades or EV charger installations, there’s minimal disruption. For larger renovations or service upgrades, we plan the work to minimize downtime and communicate clearly about any necessary temporary power shutdowns.

Can you automate older homes or retrofit smart systems?

Yes. We specialize in retrofit installations using wireless protocols like Zigbee, Z-Wave, or Wi-Fi that don’t require extensive rewiring. For renovations, we may suggest upgrading wiring for enhanced reliability and future expansion.

Can I create custom scenes and automation routines?

Yes. We can configure scenes such as “Vacation Mode,” “Goodnight,” or “Emergency” to control multiple systems (e.g. turn off lights, lock doors, adjust thermostat) with a single button or trigger like time, motion, or geolocation.

What’s the difference between smart switches and smart bulbs?

Smart switches control lights at the wall and work with any bulb.

Smart bulbs are controlled individually via an app but may not work with standard wall switches.
We usually recommend smart switches for full-room control and long-term reliability.

Can the system help with energy management?

Yes. We offer real-time energy monitoring, smart plugs, load control systems, and energy dashboards. These help reduce energy usage and identify power-hungry appliances for optimal cost-efficiency.

Is it possible to expand the system later without rewiring?

Yes. All systems we install are designed to be modular and expandable. Adding new devices or zones can usually be done wirelessly without additional infrastructure.

Do you offer training or walkthroughs after installation?

Yes. Every installation includes a hands-on walkthrough, app setup, and basic training. We also provide digital manuals and offer support packages for ongoing updates and adjustments.

What kind of maintenance do smart systems require?

Minimal. Battery-powered devices (e.g. door sensors, motion detectors) may require battery replacement every 5-10 years. Otherwise, we offer annual service checks, firmware updates, and automation reviews upon request.

Can I access my system remotely if I’m travelling internationally?

Yes. As long as you have internet access on your phone or laptop, you can fully control your system remotely, receive alerts, and even allow guests or service people temporary access to your home.
